Tokenization Could Power Personalized Portfolios, NYLIM Says
A New York Life Investments executive says tokenization's next frontier is delivering customized investment portfolios at scale.
Tokenization — the process of representing real-world assets as digital tokens on a blockchain — is poised to move beyond its early use cases in fixed income and money markets, according to a senior executive at New York Life Investments (NYLIM). The executive argues that personalized portfolio construction is the technology's most compelling next application, one that could reshape how asset managers deliver customized strategies to a broader range of investors.
Traditional personalized portfolio management, such as separately managed accounts, has historically been reserved for high-net-worth individuals because of the administrative complexity and cost involved. The concept aligns with a broader industry push toward direct indexing and hyper-personalization in wealth management, where investors want portfolios built around their specific tax situations, values, or risk tolerances. Tokenization infrastructure could make it operationally feasible for asset managers to run thousands of individualized strategies simultaneously without proportionally increasing overhead.
While the tokenization market has gained momentum — particularly in tokenized Treasuries and money-market instruments — the leap to fully personalized, tokenized equity or multi-asset portfolios still faces regulatory, liquidity, and interoperability hurdles. Still, advocates like the NYLIM executive see the current moment as a critical inflection point for proving out the technology's broader potential in asset management.
