Trump Made $1.4B From Crypto While Most Token Holders Lost Money
A financial disclosure shows Trump earned $1.4B from crypto ventures in 2025, even as most retail investors in his tokens sit at a loss.
President Trump collected $1.4 billion from cryptocurrency ventures last year, according to a financial disclosure reported by the Wall Street Journal, even as the vast majority of retail investors who bought into his family's digital tokens remain underwater. The single largest source was World Liberty Financial, the Trump family's flagship crypto venture, which alone generated $800 million for the president.
The gap between Trump's windfall and ordinary investors' losses is stark. Data provider Nansen tracked 1.48 million wallets that purchased Trump's memecoin since its January 2025 launch and found roughly two-thirds of those holders are currently in the red. The situation is worse for World Liberty Financial's WLFI token, where approximately 85% of secondary-market buyers are sitting at a loss. Trump's memecoin itself once commanded a market cap approaching $15 billion before crashing 97% to around $400 million.

The disclosure lands at a politically sensitive moment for crypto legislation on Capitol Hill. A broad crypto bill has already cleared the House but requires 60 votes to advance in the Senate, meaning Democrats must sign on. Ethics provisions designed to bar government officials from profiting off regulation they oversee have become a harder sticking point for negotiators, and Trump's massive disclosed earnings are likely to intensify that friction.
World Liberty Financial's move to launch a dollar-pegged stablecoin shortly before Trump signed the Genius Act — which created a federal regulatory framework for stablecoins — adds further scrutiny to the president's dual role as both a crypto entrepreneur and the official overseeing crypto policy. Any legislative delay stemming from the stalled Senate bill could weigh on broader market sentiment, particularly for tokens already battered by the fallout from Trump-linked ventures.
